Prenatal Classes - Downtown

Norton Hospital Expectant Parent Classes

Ready for the big day? Norton Women's Pavilion at Norton Hospital provides flexible class schedules for expectant parents to help prepare them for all aspects of childbirth. Find classes that work for you! All prenatal classes are FREE

Prenatal Class Series (Register) - Designed to help expectant parents prepare for the big day with discussions about pregnancy, labor and delivery, anesthesia, cesarean section, newborn care and safety, postpartum education and more. Attendance is recommended during the fifth, sixth or seventh month of pregnancy. The classes can be taken as a series or individually. Includes a tour of the labor and delivery and the Couplet Care areas.

  • Week one:
    Anatomy and Physiology of Pregnancy - Review of common physical changes of pregnancy and how to adapt with these changes.
    Signs, Stages and Phases of Labor - Covers signs of true labor and labor progression through each phase and stage of labor.
  • Week Two:
    Cesarean Section: What to Expect - Reasons why cesarean section is sometimes recommended, explanation of the surgical procedure, what to expect during postpartum recovery.
    OB Anesthesia: Pain Relief During Labor and Delivery - Reviews epidural anesthesia administration, sides effects, risks and benefits.
    What to Expect After Delivery: Physical and Emotional Needs of a New Mom - What to expect during your postpartum recovery, postpartum blues and balancing your new role.
  • Week three:
    Grandparents' Night at Prenatal Class - Couples enrolled in the prenatal series may invite their parents to come hear the latest information in newborn care and safety.
    Your Newborn Baby - Normal newborn characteristics and hospital care will be discussed.
    How to Care for Your Baby: Sleeping, Eating, Bathing, Car and Home Safety - Be prepared for your new baby with instruction on baby basics like diapering, feeding, sleeping, car seat safety and home safety.

Special classes and opportunities:

  • Sibling Class (Register) - Each family is unique in how it will adjust to a new baby. This class helps prepare children ages 3 to 10 for welcoming a new brother or sister into the family.
  • Marvelous Multiples (Register) - If you're expecting two or more babies, this three-class series can help you prepare for the birth of multiples. Topics include prenatal care, emotions, risks and complications, premature birth, labor and delivery, recovery and postpartum, and life at home with multiple newborns.
  • Infant CPR (Register) - New parents learn rescue breathing, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and choking rescue procedures for infants. It is not a CPR certification class.
  • Making Breast-feeding Work (Register) - This class offers information to help mothers develop breast-feeding skills, establish and maintain a good milk supply, and understand how babies breast-feed successfully. Information about breast-feeding and returning to work will be covered. Reliable breast pumps, clothing and accessories will be on hand and guidelines will be suggested for choosing the right pump.
  • Childbirth Preparation Class (Register) - Covers basic breathing and relaxation techniques to prepare for labor progression through each phase and stage of labor. This class is beneficial for all expectant couples preparing for labor. Want to start planning early?

  • Expectant Parent Tours (Register) - Free tours of a labor and delivery room (if available) and Couplet Care areas are available for those not attending the Prenatal Series. Tours begin at the third-floor seating area just off the elevators at Norton Hospital.

  • Smoke-free for Mommy and Me: Free Smoking Cessation Classes (Register) - Need help putting out that cigarette? If you are planning to have a baby, pregnant or just had a baby, we have resources and support to help you quit smoking. Join us for a free six-week smoking cessation series designed just for you.

  • NICU tours - Special expectant parent tours that include the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) may be scheduled by appointment for families anticipating a NICU stay.

  • Car Seat Checks - Schedule a car seat check by a certified child passenger safety technician. For an appointment, call the Office of Child Advocacy of Kosair Children's Hospital at
    (502) 629-7358.
  • Adoptive Parent Class - For parents anticipating a newborn adoption. Normal newborn care and safety are reviewed. Call (502) 629-7274 to schedule a free class.
  • Excursión del Norton Centro de Nacimento en Español - El Norton Centro de Nacimento ofrecerá una excursión prenatal en Español cada mes. Prepared childbirth/Lamaze classes:

  • Virginia Rutherford, certified childbirth instructor and Lamaze member, instructs parents on breathing patterns and relaxation, exercises, massage techniques, labor support and pain management with or without an epidural.

  • Lisa Bache, Lamaze-certified childbirth educator, Lamaze breast-feeding support specialist and certified doula (DONA), presents the new Lamaze philosophy of childbirth.
