Prenatal Class Series
Designed to help expectant parents prepare for the big day with discussions about labor, delivery, anesthesia, breast-feeding, cesarean section, finding a pediatrician, newborn care and safety, postpartum education and more. Includes a tour of a labor and delivery room, postpartum room and newborn nursery.
What to Expect with Induction of Labor (Register) - reasons why induction is at times recommended, what happens during induction of labor, process of pitocin administration and common interventions with induction of labor.
Cesarean Section: What to Expect at the Hospital and at Home (Register) - reasons why cesarean section is at times recommended, explanation of the surgical procedure, what to expect in the first few hours after surgery, what to expect during your post-partum stay and managing care of the baby while recovering those few weeks at home.
Baby Basics from the Pediatrician (Register) - A pediatrician will be give expert advice on what to expect in the hospital, those first few weeks at home, newborn characteristics, newborn nutrition, immunizations, schedule of well check for baby, signs of illness or concern and when to call for help. Special question and answer time to provide you with answers from the expert.
Marathon Class (First eight classes rolled into a one-day program) (Register) - The morning session teaches when to come to the hospital, warning signs in pregnancy, signs of pre-term labor, stages and phases of labor and delivery, reasons for induction and c-section, pain management during labor and delivery. Receive a tour of Labor and Delivery and the post-partum units and break for lunch on your own. The afternoon sessions teaches newborn care, pediatrician talk about newborn characteristics, care of the newborn, immunizations, signs of illness, and when to call for help, post-partum care for mom and basics of breastfeeding.
Special classes
Sibling Class (Register) - Each family is unique in how it will adjust to a new baby. This class helps prepare children ages 3 to 10 for welcoming a new brother or sister into the home. Special class for pre-school age and school-age children to address their specific needs.
Marvelous Multiples (Register) - If you're expecting two or more babies, this four-week series can help you prepare for the birth of multiples. Topics include prenatal care, emotions, risks and complications, premature birth, labor and delivery, recovery and postpartum, and life at home with multiple newborns.
Planning your Natural Childbirth (Register) - You will learn how to plan your successful unmediated delivery. Receive a birth plan and discuss how to put one together for success. Learn comfort measures that work to manage your pain without medication as well as positioning, basic breathing and relaxation techniques. Want to start planning early? Becoming a New Dad (Register) - To ease concerns of the expectant father. Learn about bathing, diapering, and dressing, how to calm a fussy baby, provide support for the new mom with baby blues and post-partum depression.
Grandparents Tea (Register) - Open to new grandmothers and grandfathers. Learn what has changed since your baby, get advice from a pediatrician and registered nurse on how you can best help the new mom and baby.
Car Seat Checks (Register) - Have your car seat checked by a certified child passenger safety technician. Car seat checks are on the 5th floor of the east parking garage every second Tuesday of the month.
Pet Safety (Register) - Interactive program about pet safety with babies and children. Help your pet adjust to bringing home a baby and how to avoid and correct issues with pet safety and children.
Family and Friends CPR: Basic breathing and rescue information (Register) - American Heart Association program, doesn't provide certification but is great for grandparents, sitters, and siblings. Learn how to identify problems with breathing and give rescue breaths and when and how to call for help
Childbirth Refresher (Register) - Special class for parents who have already had one or more children. Learn updates on signs of pre-term and full term labor, when to come to the hospital, stages and phases of labor and routine post-partum care
Success by 6 (Register) - Success By 6 is an early childhood development initiative dedicated to providing all children with a good start in life. It helps to ensure that children ages 0 to 6 develop the emotional, social, cognitive, and physical skills they need as they enter school.
New Mommy 101 (Register) - Get tips and advice on parenting, share your concerns or discuss areas of interest and learn the latest information about keeping your baby healthy. Special question and answer time with a lactation consultant.
Expectant parent tours (Register) - Free tours of a labor and delivery room (if available), postpartum room and the newborn nursery are available for those not attending the Prenatal Series. Tours begin in the first-floor lobby of Norton Medical Plaza III - Suburban (Norton Women's Pavilion). Tours and classes are not given on holidays. Call (502) 629-1234 to register.
Prepared Childbirth/Lamaze Classes
Virginia Rutherford, certified childbirth instructor and Lamaze member, instructs parents on breathing patterns and relaxation, exercises, massage techniques, labor support and pain management with or without an epidural. For more information, call (502) 426-4542.
